Can acupuncture improve sperm quality?
Possibly, and the honest version is short: a handful of small trials report improved sperm motility and morphology, the shape of the sperm, after a course of acupuncture, but the trials are few, mostly low quality, and none has shown an increase in pregnancies. Male factors contribute to about 40 to 50 percent of infertility, and a semen analysis and a urologist's evaluation come first. Because spermatogenesis, the production of a mature sperm, takes roughly 74 days, any plan, acupuncture or otherwise, runs at least three months before a repeat analysis can show whether it worked.
What the trials show
A 2005 German trial of 40 men with unexplained infertility found more normally shaped sperm after ten sessions over five weeks compared with untreated controls. Later small trials reported improved motility and, in one, a rise in count. Reviews pooling them consistently reach the same conclusion: promising signals, weak methods, small numbers, no pregnancy data. That is not nothing, but it is not a treatment to rely on when a count is very low or a varicocele or obstruction has been found, both of which a urologist can treat.
What could plausibly be happening
Sperm quality is sensitive to heat, oxidative stress, and the hormonal signaling of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, the male version of the axis discussed in the fertility articles. Acupuncture's measured effects on stress hormones and autonomic tone are a plausible route to modest change, and Chinese medicine treats the common pattern, kidney deficiency, in plain words a depleted reproductive reserve, with herbs and food as well as needles. The changes with far stronger evidence are the unglamorous ones: stopping smoking, limiting alcohol, keeping the testes cool, losing excess weight, and treating a varicocele when one is present.
How a three-month plan is built
Start with a semen analysis and, if it is abnormal, a urologist's evaluation. A course is then weekly acupuncture for about twelve weeks, a herbal formula chosen for the pattern, and the lifestyle changes above, with a repeat semen analysis at the end. If the plan is coordinated with a partner's IVF cycle, timing matters: the sperm used at retrieval began developing three months earlier.
Common questions
Does the practice treat male partners?
Ask when you call; the practice's specialties include men's health, and fertility plans are often built for both partners. A semen analysis before the first visit makes the plan more specific.
How long before a repeat semen analysis?
At least three months after starting, because that is one full cycle of sperm production. Earlier tests reflect sperm that developed before treatment.
Can acupuncture help erectile dysfunction or low testosterone?
Erectile dysfunction is often vascular or hormonal and needs a physician's evaluation; acupuncture has small trials for the psychogenic form. Low testosterone is a diagnosis to make and treat medically. Both are treated alongside a physician, not instead of one.
General information, not medical advice. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine support, and do not replace, care from your physician. Whether treatment fits your situation is decided at a first visit.
