Women's Health
Anxiety and low mood are treated as part of hormonal balance, not separately from it.
When brain chemistry and stress hormones are out of balance, sleep, appetite, and energy all follow. So does everything else.
Stress is not only a feeling. It is cortisol, a nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight, and the sleep, digestion, and hormones that unravel behind it. Chinese medicine has never separated the emotional from the physical, and acupuncture's effect on the stress response is among its best-documented.

The old men's health page puts it simply: when people are suffering from depression, brain chemicals and stress hormones are out of balance, and sleep, appetite, and energy levels are all disturbed. Chronic stress keeps cortisol high and the sympathetic nervous system, fight-or-flight, switched on, which disrupts sleep, digestion, immunity, and the reproductive hormones. Men are four times more likely to die by suicide than women, and under-diagnosed depression is part of why.
In Chinese medicine, the classic pattern is liver qi stagnation, in plain words Qi that fails to move smoothly, producing irritability, tension, sighing, and a tight chest, often with heart or spleen deficiency underneath that adds anxiety, poor sleep, worry, and fatigue. Women's hormonal cycles and the perimenopausal years add their own patterns. The diagnosis is read from your history, tongue, and pulse.
Treatment rebalances the system the feeling sits on. Counseling and medication, when needed, treat the feeling itself, and the two fit together.
Anxiety and low mood are treated as part of hormonal balance, not separately from it.
Depression in men is under-diagnosed, and acupuncture is used to rebalance the stress hormones and sleep behind it.
Stress measurably lowers fertility, so calming the nervous system is built into every fertility plan.

Needling at acupoints produces measurable changes in the autonomic nervous system: heart-rate variability shifts toward the parasympathetic, rest-and-digest, side, and studies of cortisol show lower levels after a course of treatment. The research base is strong enough that the military uses acupuncture for post-traumatic stress and combat stress. Under women's health, anxiety and low mood are treated as part of the hormonal picture; under men's health, the same work addresses the stress hormones and sleep behind depression that often goes unnamed.
For couples trying to conceive, stress is not a side issue. It suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and is one of the systems fertility care works on directly; how acupuncture supports fertility explains the mechanism. Treatment is a weekly series with a Chinese herbal formula prescribed to your pattern and whole food nutrition in support, and sleep is usually the first thing to shift.

Trials of acupuncture for anxiety and depression are mixed: several report meaningful improvement compared with no treatment or waitlist, differences against sham acupuncture are smaller, and reviews call the evidence promising but not conclusive. We describe it as support for the stress response and sleep, not as a replacement for therapy or medication. If you are on an antidepressant, stay on it; acupuncture and herbs fit alongside it, and any herbal formula is chosen with your medication in mind.
The decision rule: thoughts of harming yourself, or depression that stops you functioning, need a physician or a crisis line today, not an acupuncture appointment. For the ordinary weight of stress, anxiety, poor sleep, and low mood, what happens at a first visit describes where we begin, and when sleep is the main casualty, insomnia has its own page.

Yes. Acupuncture does not interfere with antidepressants, and you should not stop medication to start treatment. Tell us what you take so any herbal formula is chosen with it in mind, and keep your prescribing physician informed about the herbs.
Needling shifts the autonomic nervous system toward the parasympathetic, rest-and-digest, side, measurable as heart-rate variability, and a course of treatment has been shown to lower cortisol. That is the physiological account of what patients describe as feeling calmer and sleeping better.
Sleep and the sense of pressure often shift within the first few weekly sessions; mood tends to take longer, and we plan in blocks of six to twelve sessions and adjust as you respond. Herbs and nutrition carry the work between visits.
